Slavoj Zizek and Ideologies in Film

zizek-blur1

Slavoj Zizek gives a 2 hour lecture about ideology in cinema at the Sarajevo Film Festival, August 2008. The lecture ranges from bashing Spielberg and his father figures, Stalinism, La Vita est Bella, to the f***ed up idealogies that Zizek finds in films. A very interesting lecture. At the beginning, he speaks in Slovenian for a couple minutes, then switches to english.

Ben Barenholtz

After starting “Midnight Movies” in New York in the late 60s, starting the Elgin theatre, opening El Topo, Pink Flamingos, a legend in independant cinema in the States. Got the Coen Brothers started, producing Blood Simple, Barton Fink, and Raising Arizona. An old, very sharp, very funny guy who’s managed to make movies and stay out of hollywood for going on 40 years. Among other things, he discusses his experiences of the past, and Euro-pudding films.

Branko Lustig

Full of anecdotes from his years and years of producing in Croatia under Tito, and then his trip to Los Angeles and his experiences producing “Schindler’s List”, “Gladiator”, etc. etc, and even his time in Auschwitz during WWII. All from a very down to earth POV. A really entertaining person to listen to.

Naturalism vs. Artifice in Film

In this open panel, Aida Begic (“Snow”), Danis Tanovic (“No Man’s Land”), Baltasar Kamorkur (“Jar City”), James Marsh (“Man on Wire”) Gonzalo Arion (“Stranded”), and Lior Sharmiz (“Japan Japan”), discuss their particular approaches and leanings towards naturalism and artifice in film. Got quite interesting once some conflicting sides among the panel were revealed. They ignore a main point of the whole debate – how has the audience’s relationship with naturalism and artifice changed in the past 15-20 years?
